Find out a clinic’s IVF/ICSI rates for births per embryo transferred for all treatment types, and a separate figure for stimulated fresh own egg cycles only as well as the clinic’s multiple birth rate. For greater detail on clinic performance see their detailed statistics below. You could look at other data such as pregnancy and birth rates per cycle of treatment and per embryo transferred (please note all detailed statistics data is currently from 2018/19 and will be updated in late 2025).

Remember, whatever measure you focus on it can’t tell you your individual chance of success (only your doctor can do that), but each measure does give you a fair overall view of the clinic’s performance.

Births per embryo transferred Information: This rate shows the number of births (counted as a single birth event ie. twin births count as one live birth event) divided by the total number of embryos transferred

We show the number of births per embryo transferred as it promotes embryo transfer practices that minimise the chances of twins, which carry health risks for the babies and the mother. We calculate the overall average births per embryo transferred for all treatments at the clinic (including fresh cycles, frozen transfers, treatments using donor eggs, and treatment using PGT-A) and also for the subset of fresh stimulated embryos involving the patient’s own eggs.

However, this measure does not incorporate the outcomes of patients who do not reach embryo transfer stage.

Multiple birth rates Information: This rate shows the number of multiple birth events (counted as a single multiple birth event ie. twin births, triplet births, quad births all count as one multiple birth) divided by the total number of birth events (counted as a single birth event ie. singleton, twin birth, triplet birth, quad births all count as one birth event)

For some people, having twins may seem like a wonderful thing, but multiple pregnancies are less safe for both mother and babies. That’s why we’ve set a target for all clinics to have a multiple birth rate of 10% or lower – see how they’re performing below. The professional bodies have best practice guidelines to assist clinics in determining when a single embryo should be transferred and the factors which can make double embryo transfer appropriate.

National rate

It may be tempting to obsess over success rates, but the most important thing to focus on is whether the clinic’s results are consistent with the national average. Try not to read anything into differences of a few percentage points above or below the national average, as these are often down to chance rather than being a reflection of a clinic’s abilities.

Reliability range

The reliability range shows how confident we are that a clinic will repeat its success rate in the future – the narrower the range, the more confident we can be. Large clinics normally have a narrower reliability range. That’s not because their data is more accurate but because their rate is less likely to be affected by small changes in the number of births in one year. Small clinics aren’t worse but their success rate is more likely to be affected by these kinds of changes.

There are two rates shown for births per embryo transferred. The first one shows the chance of having a baby per embryo transferred, when you take all the different types of treatment into account. Some treatment types might affect this figure, for example by increasing the rate. In particular, if a clinic carries out a number of cycles using donor eggs and/or PGT-A that is higher than the national average, it can be harder to compare the clinic’s rate against the UK average and against other clinics. Where this is the case, we have noted this on the clinic’s page.

For PGT-A, this is because the headline figure is per embryo transferred. In PGT-A, embryos are selected by looking for abnormalities in their chromosomes, as embryos that appear to have missing or extra chromosomes have less chance of a developing into a baby. Patients having embryos transferred with a normal chromosome number may therefore have a higher chance of having a baby from that particular embryo. However, the test often reduces the number of embryos available for transfer and may mean that there are no embryos to transfer. PGT-A occasionally leads to the exclusion of an embryo that would in fact have developed normally. This means while the chance of a baby per embryo transferred may be higher, if we look at the chance of having a baby for each cycle of treatment started, it may be lower. Evidence shows that for most patients starting treatment, PGT-A does not improve the chances of having a baby. For more information about PGT-A please see our add-ons page

Also, the chance of having a baby with IVF using donor eggs is generally higher compared with IVF using a patient’s own eggs, particularly if they are older than 38. This is because the health and age of the egg donor influences the chance of a baby being born. Egg donors are screened and are under the age of 36, so there is a higher chance of a baby being born, especially for patients who are older, have poor quality eggs, or produce a low number of eggs.
