More single patients and female same-sex couples are having fertility treatment but disparities in access remain, says regulator
Report from the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) shows: Female same-sex couples had the highest birth rate among all family types; Opposite-sex couples were twice as likely to receive NHS funding than single patients and female same-sex couples as single patients and female same-sex couples to receive NHS funding; One in five of all IVF and DI treatments were had by female same-sex couples or single patients.

Clare Ettinghausen, Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, said: “The HFEA has a limited role in surrogacy arrangements, overseeing only how clinics deliver the fertility treatment patient pathway and consents where surrogacy takes place in a licensed UK clinic. We have no remit in relation to regulating surrogacy arrangements that take place outside the UK.
