Haemochromatosis is a disease of iron
metabolism where the body accumulates excess
iron. As the excess iron is within the circulatory
system it can then travel throughout the body and
deposit on a variety of organs. The accumulation
of iron on organ systems then causes damage and
ultimately organ failure, for example of the heart,
liver, spleen, and osteoporosis. In males this also
causes testicular atrophy; and in females
amenorrhea.
