HFEA Statement: Functional eggs made from human skin cells
Please see a statement from the HFEA below.
Tim Child, Chair of the HFEA’s Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee (SCAAC), said:
“This study shows that it could be possible to produce fertilisable eggs from human skin cells, which could provide another option for those undergoing fertility treatment in the future. However, at this point the research is just a proof of concept and further research is required to address the process’ safety and effectiveness before it can begin to be considered in a clinical setting.
“The HFEA’s SCAAC and Authority have both discussed the subject of stem-cell based embryo models and in-vitro gametes, and recommended that they should be subject to statutory regulation in time. We will continue to monitor advances in science and technology as they emerge.”
