Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) - chance of success

Female fertility diminishes with age, so if you are using your own eggs, on average, the younger you are, the higher your chances of success.

In 2006, for women receiving stimulated intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment using fresh embryos created with their own eggs, the percentage of cycles started that resulted in a live birth (national average) was:

  • 33.2% (2427/7400) for women aged under 35
  • 27.1% (1098/4052) for women aged between 35–37
  • 20% (479/2394) for women aged 38–39
  • 11.5% (225/1950) for women aged 40–42
  • 4.5% (17/377) for women aged 43–44
  • 8.5% (8/94) for women aged over 44

Figures given in brackets are (ICSI cycles resulting in a live birth / ICSI cycles started). The data does not include in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycles.
