As much of the treatment is similar to in vitro fertilisation (IVF), the risks with gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT) are also similar, including the possibility of reactions to drugs and multiple births.

GIFT, also has the added risks that are a part of any procedure that involves the use of a general anaesthetic and surgery.

There are also the particular risks of laparoscopy. Although it is a rare complication, trauma to structures in the abdomen can occur during the insertion process of the laparoscope.
