GIFT - get started
If you are having problems getting pregnant, your first call should be to your GP. They will look at your medical history, give you a physical examination and may recommend some tests or lifestyle changes.
Your GP can also refer you to see a specialist at your local hospital or fertility clinic.
What to expect at the fertility clinic
If you have any relevant information such as the results of past tests or treatments it is always helpful to bring those with you.
A full infertility history will be taken from both you, and if applicable, your partner.
The options that you have will be discussed. Further investigations may be required.
It may be that there are simple treatments (such as ovulation induction) that can be offered before GIFT needs to be considered.
If GIFT is indicated, your specialist will be able to refer you on to an appropriate Assisted Conception Unit.
What will happen at the Assisted Conception Unit
When you visit a clinic, be prepared to answer questions on your medical and social history, to enable the clinic to assess the impact of a potential birth on both the baby and on any other children you may have.
Counselling is always available and can be particularly helpful at this time. If donor sperm are being used, counselling becomes essential.
Once you are accepted for treatment, there are further blood tests that will be taken.
The treatment plan will then be discussed with you in detail.
You will also need to sign an insemination consent form and consent to disclosure of identifying information.
