Statement on use of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for inherited cancer susceptibility Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), said: "The role of medicine has always been to try to relieve pain and suffering and to try to improve the quality of life for people. As technology has developed, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) has provided a new and early way to identify potential problems of inherited cancer and similar conditions.
Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), said: "Any UK research project involving human embryos cannot take place until it has been approved by the HFEA. This includes close scrutiny of how any eggs, sperm and embryos are obtained for that particular project.
