20-12-2006 New Chair of Human Tissue Authority and Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority appointed
It was announced today (20 December 2006) that Shirley Harrison will be appointed as Chair of both the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). This appointment will take effect from 1 January 2007.

29-09-2006: HFEA proposes £2950 for annual regulation fees for insemination clinics

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is proposing an annual licence fee of £2950 that previously unlicensed insemination clinics will be required to pay under the European Union Tissues and Cells Directive (EUTD).

The HFEA is today asking the public about the detailed issues for women donating their eggs for research.  The paper outlines the key details raised by the issue of donating for research, including how women donors could be vulnerable and questions about the potential safeguards that could help.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) can announce the appointment of the interim Chair and two temporary members selected by the NHS Appointments Commission.  Lord Richard Harries of Pentregarth (formally the Bishop of Oxford) will take up his position as interim Chair on 1st September 2006.

The HFEA have announced today how it will develop new guidance on whether it is appropriate for women to donate their eggs for use in scientific research with plans for a full public consultation from September onwards.

Statement on use of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for inherited cancer susceptibility Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), said: "The role of medicine has always been to try to relieve pain and suffering and to try to improve the quality of life for people. As technology has developed, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) has provided a new and early way to identify potential problems of inherited cancer and similar conditions.

Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), said: "Any UK research project involving human embryos cannot take place until it has been approved by the HFEA. This includes close scrutiny of how any eggs, sperm and embryos are obtained for that particular project.

20-04-2006: UK fertility regulator holds open meeting in Belfast

The UK regulator for fertility treatment and human embryo research, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), will be holding an open Authority meeting in Belfast for the first time on Wednesday 10 May 2006 giving the public the chance to see the deliberations of the HFEA and also ask questions of the Authority's members.


27-02-2006: HFEA announces new Authority Member

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has announced the appointment of a new Authority member, Dr Sue Price, who has been selected by the NHS Appointments Commission. Dr Price will serve a three-year with immediate effect.


15-02-2006: Authority ask for more information on protection and finance before agreeing a new policy for donors for research

Authority members of the HFEA - the UK regulator for embryo research and fertility treatment - have asked for more detailed examination of how donors could be protected and how the financial aspects of research donation would work before they bring in a new policy on the donation of eggs, sperm and embryos for research.
