Sharmila is a finance and business professional with extensive experience across a range of sectors in strategy, mergers & acquisitions and business operations. She began her career as a management consultant with Coopers & Lybrand, where she advised on business issues on a broad range of projects around the world.
As well as advising private sector clients, in the early 1990s she worked on several large economic reform projects on behalf of international agencies, such as the European Commission in the liberalising economies of Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet Union. Most recently, she has worked in telecoms and television and is currently Chief Operating Officer and Finance Director of the BBC's New Media and Technology business which creates products and services for the internet and for digital television.
Sharmila studied Physiological Sciences at the University of Oxford. She has maintained a keen interest in science since graduating in 1988 and has been a lay member of the Authority since 1998. She is also member of the Human Tissue Authority and Olympic Lottery Distributer.
