In the first half of 2004, the HFEA carried out a review of its policy on preimplantation tissue typing, a new technique which allows the selection of embryos in order to bring about the birth of a child who can provide a matched tissue donation to an existing sibling. Tissue typing of embryos can be carried out on its own or in combination with preimplantation genetic diagnosis to avoid a serious genetic condition in the resulting child.
Following the birth of the first baby conceived after preimplantation tissue typing, the HFEA developed an interim policy on the technique in 2001. The Authority published a revised policy in July 2004, following a detailed review of the most recent scientific, medical, legal, ethical and psychosocial thinking and the results of specially commissioned research into public opinion.
