13-11-2008: HFEA Chair welcomes Royal Assent for HFE Act

Ground breaking new legislation updating the law on assisted reproduction and embryo research has today received Royal Assent. The bulk of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act will come into force in October 2009 although some provisions will come into effect from April 2009. .

08-10-2008 HFEA figures reveal more than 10,000 women had successful IVF treatment in 2006

The number of women having successful in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment topped 10,000 for the first time in 2006, according to new figures released by the HFEA today. There were 10,242 births resulting in 12,596 babies in 2006, an increase of 13.1% on the number of births in 2005.


07-10-2008 Statement on the judgement in the L case

The HFEA today welcomed the judgement reaffirming the provisions of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act which requires a person to provide written consent before gametes (eggs and sperm) can be stored lawfully.


05-09-2008 New Authority members appointed

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has today announced the appointment of new Authority members by the Appointments Commission. Most of the new appointments will take effect from 1 September 2008 for a period of three years.


03-09-2008 HFEA Statement on elective Single Embryo Transfer (eSET) guidelines

HFEA's response to the publication of guidelines by the British Fertility Society and Association of Clinical Embryologists to help clinicians reduce the number of multiple births following fertility treatment.


2-07-2008: Statement from the HFEA:

Angela McNab has decided to leave the HFEA to pursue her career with the Department of Health, with effect from 30 September 2008.  She will remain on secondment to the Department of Health until that time.

The HFEA thanks Angela for her dedicated service and the achievements she has made, and wishes her well in the future.

An HFEA Licence Committee has approved an application from the Clinical Sciences Research Institute, University of Warwick for the creation of hybrid embryos.
