HFEA Annual Conference 2008

Over 250 people, including clinicians, scientists, policy makers and journalists attended this year´s annual conference in October.

It was held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Delegates heard keynote speeches from HFEA Chair, Professor Lisa Jardine, Minister of State for Public Health, Dawn Primarolo MP and Lord Justice of Appeal, Sir Alan Moses.

Open Authority Meeting - Edinburgh

The next Open Authority meeting will be held on 17 December 2008 at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

2006 live birth rates published

The live birth rate data for calendar year 2006 has been published in the ´Find a clinic´ section of the HFEA website. The figures show the number of people having successful treatment in a year topped 10,000 for the first time.

Since the roll out of a new electronic system for collecting data, we are now better placed to provide performance information, which patients and others find so useful, in a more timely way.

Policy and Guidance

Update on multiple births and single embryo transfer policy

From 1 January 2009, all clinics will be required to have a documented Multiple Births Minimisation Strategy which will set out how they intend to reduce their annual multiple birth rates and to ensure that they do not exceed the HFEA-set maximum figure.

Revised policy on the collection, confirmation and publication of data

A new policy on the collection, confirmation and publication of Register data will come into effect on 1 November 2008. This clearly sets out the roles and responsibilities of the HFEA and of licensed centres and their Persons Responsible.

Workshops for parents of donor-conceived children


The Donor Conception Network is running four pilot Preparation for DC Parenthood workshops in three UK cities between November 2008 and April 2009.

The workshops are for couples (heterosexual or lesbian) or single women who are contemplating egg, sperm or embryo donation as a way of building or adding to a family and those who are currently having treatment.

The workshops will provide information about the medical, legal, psychological and social/emotional implications of donor conception treatment and subsequent family raising.

Fertility Forest ? new joint initiative from INUK and the Woodland Trust

Infertility Network UK and the Woodland Trust have teamed up to help those affected by infertility turn their experience into something positive whilst supporting our natural heritage and raising funds for charity.

New training workshop on reducing multiple births

A half day workshop to help centres discuss and consider best practice approaches for accelerating the reduction in multiple births will be held on 11 December 2008 in central London.
This workshop is aimed at all staff in fertility centres and all those who commission fertility services. Attendance is free, but places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Full programme released for PET conference

The full programme has now been confirmed for the Progress Educational Trust's one-day conference on the human embryo and multi-faith perspectives.The conference will be held in East London on 19 November.
This conference will bring together practitioners, patients and people of all faiths and includes three sessions on 'Is the Embryo Sacrosanct?', 'Faith in pre-implantation genetic diagnosis´ and ´Gamete donation and doctrine´.
