Dr Alan Thornhill
Biography
Dr Thornhill has worked in the field of reproductive biology for 20 years and has been a clinical embryologist for the past 15 years, working in public and private sector IVF centres in the UK (King’s College Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, London Fertility Centre and London Bridge Fertility, Gynaecology and Genetics Centre) and US (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota).
Dr Thornhill obtained his PhD from the University of London on the “Effects of the Sex Chromosomes on early growth and development in the Mouse”.
Dr Thornhill has served as Deputy Chair of the ESHRE PGD Consortium and is the current secretary of Alpha-Scientists in Reproductive Medicine and a member of the Progress Educational Trust Advisory Board. He has over 100 publications in fertility and genetics and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences.
Dr Thornhill makes frequent contributions to print and broadcast media discussing assisted reproduction and reproductive genetics, and his television appearances include Channel 4’s ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ and ‘Cutting Edge’.
He joined the HFEA in November 2009.
