CORE Judicial review on PGD with tissue typing

The HFEA is disappointed by the decision that PGD with HLA tissue typing is prohibited and has stated that it will appeal. The Authority will be considering the judgement carefully and taking advice.
Because the consequences of the judgement are unclear, no further statement will be issued at this time, but the HFEA will be providing a detailed press briefing in the New Year.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) involves the removal of a cell from an embryo created by in vitro fertilisation. The cell is then tested to see if the embryo carries a genetic disorder. This is usually three days after fertilisation when the embryo has six to ten cells. Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) tissue typing is an additional step to determine the tissue-compatibility of embryos free from the disorder with an existing sibling.
