Following the announcement that a 58 year old woman had given birth to an IVF baby
03 February 2003
Following reports of a 58 year old woman giving birth after IVF treatment, the HFEA spokeswoman Ann Furedi said:
‘There is no upper age limit on couples receiving IVF treatment. However the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (section 13[5]) specifies that: before providing any woman with treatment, centres must take into account any welfare of the child that may be born as result.
The HFEA's Code of Practice sets out factors that Centres should bear in mind when making this assessment. These include the health, age and future ability to look after or provide for the needs of any child born as a result of treatment.'
