Summary of request

The Authority was asked for the number of human embryos currently in storage in the UK.

HFEA response

This information is not held by the HFEA. We are informed by the number of embryos frozen by UK licensed centres for the patient’s own future treatment, for donation and for research purposes. However those centres conducting research projects using frozen embryos are not required to inform us when embryos designated for use in research are thawed. This is makes it impossible for us to state how many embryos are frozen at any given point in time.
