F-2013-00085 - Success rates and reasons given for fertility treatment

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for figures for success rates and the reasons given for needing fertility treatment.

HFEA response

A document published by the HFEA may be useful. The latest trends and figures for UK fertility treatment can be found here: http://www.hfea.gov.uk/104.html . In particular Figure 3 on page 13 is of relevance but the whole document might prove useful. The data used in this graph is available in the spread sheet in the same location.

Also available is information relating to the top 3 reasons given by under 25s receiving IVF for infertility, at UK clinics in the North East region in 2011. These are:

1.       Patient – Tubal Disorders

2.       Partner – Male Factor, Oligozoospermia

3.       Patient unexplained, Partner – ‘Other’ infertility reasons.

It should be noted that these reasons for infertility are chosen from a given list.

The Choose a Fertility Clinic website: http://guide.hfea.gov.uk/guide/ shows details for each licensed UK fertility clinic’s success rates and how they are compared to the national average. It might also be useful to read guidance on using success rates: http://www.hfea.gov.uk/fertility-clinics-success-rates.html#1.
