Summary of request

The Authority was asked for the number of anonymous sperm donors known to be the biological father to more than 5 children through IVF and ICSI treatment.

HFEA response

In these numbers we have taken ‘anonymous donors’ to mean donors who were registered with the HFEA before 01/04/2005 and who haven’t since re-registered as identifiable. This date was the point after which new donors who registered with the HFEA were automatically identifiable. 

Where the numbers of babies born into 21+ and 11+ have been combined, this has been done so in order to protect the anonymity of those to whom the HFEA owes a duty of confidence. For the same reason low numbers in the table have been replaced with ‘<5’.
