F-2013-00035 - Single women creating and cryopreserving embryos with donor sperm

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for the number of single women who have created and cryopreserved embryos for potential further use using donor sperm.

HFEA response

The number of single women who meet these criteria is five, or fewer than five. The reason for the figure being rounded in this way is in order to guarantee the anonymity of the patients in question to whom the HFEA owes a duty of care.

This figure was arrived at by identifying patients who had no partner listed, where all the embryos created in a cycle were stored or discarded and where there was no reason given as to why a cycle might have been abandoned before embryo transfer.
