Summary of request

The Authority was asked how many pre-implantation tissue typing procedures have occured in the UK.

HFEA response

In the UK the HFEA licences centres to carry out pre-implantation tissue typing. There are currently [11 September 2012] 19 centres licensed to carry out pre-implantation tissue typing. Once licensed, the centres can then apply to us for approval to treat particular families. We approved 9 application in 2010, 15 applications in 2011 and 7 applications in 2012 (up until 5 September 2012). Once they have obtained our approval, the family's treatment can start, which may involve more than one cycle of IVF and pre-implantation tissue typing.
