HFEA statement on CNR application

The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) is currently considering a licence application from the Newcastle Fertility Centre at Life to make human embryonic stem cells using cell nuclear transfer – a technique also known as therapeutic cloning.

The Research Licence Committee met on the 16th June and decided to request further expert opinion in order to make a decision about whether or not to grant the licence. The committee is now adjourned and will reconvene upon receipt of this information.

If you are a journalist but do not normally receive HFEA press releases and would like to ensure you are notified of the decision, please e-mail the press office with details of your name, publication, telephone number and e-mail address.

Notes to editors

The HFEA was set up in August 1991 as part of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. The HFEA's principal tasks are to license and monitor clinics that carry out in vitro fertilisation (IVF), donor insemination (DI) and human embryo research. The HFEA also regulates the storage of gametes (eggs and sperm) and embryos.
