F-2012-00111 - Outcomes from treatment with patient-own frozen-thawed eggs

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for information about pregnancies and births resulting from treatment involving patient own frozen-thawed eggs.

HFEA response

Please see the table below for this information, as reported to us by clinics -

Years  Cycles  Pregnancies  Birth Events  Babies Born
2001 3 1 1
2002 3 0 0 0
2003 2 0 0 0
2004 2 0 0 0
2005 7 2
2006 4 0 0 0

2009 34 3 2 2
2010 51 11 6 6
2011* 11 2 0 0

*Figures for 2011 will be low due to the period of pregnancy and the lag time between the event and clinics reporting to the HFEA, we expect they will increase in due course.

Information about which clinics had achieved pregnancies using patient own frozen-thawed eggs was also requested and this information is listed here:

This information was extracted from the HFEA’s data warehouse containing Register data on 18/06/2012. There are a small number of cycles excluded where the use of frozen-thawed eggs is unverified. We were unable verify these (ie, provide a direct link between the treatment form in which the eggs are used and any form that details their storage) within the ‘appropriate limit’ set out in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 ('the Regulations').  This limit is £450 and for the purposes of estimating cost, staff time is calculated at notional rate of £25 per hour. Section 12 of the FOIA allows public authorities to decline to provide information requested under the FOIA where the cost of doing so would exceed this appropriate limit. Nevertheless, we aim to complete verification of the excluded cycles.
