Statement on the draft revised fertility guideline from NICE

The HFEA welcomes the draft revised fertility guideline from NICE, released for public consultation today.

Since the 2004 NICE guidelines, there have been advancements into our understanding of what causes infertility and this knowledge has translated into better clinical care for patients.

Multiple births remain the biggest single preventable health risk to mothers and their babies. We therefore particularly welcome the focus in the draft guideline on the number of embryos that should be transferred during treatment.

Our multiple births policy requires clinics to ensure that no more than 15% of births following treatment in the clinic are multiple births. Our aim is to reduce this still further over time to 10%.

We will consider the draft guideline and our formal response when the Authority next meets in June.
