Statement on recent study suggesting link between ICSI treatment and occurrence of birth defects
11 May 2012
On 5 and 6 May there were several articles published in the press about a piece of research suggesting a link between ICSI treatment and the occurrence of birth defects.
The HFEA works hard to keep abreast of scientific and clinical advances in fertility treatment, and we would like to see more research into the effects of assisted reproduction treatment (ART) on both mother and child.
Whilst this new study does suggest a link between ICSI and a higher than normal rate of birth defects, it is important to remember that the increase in risk observed in this study is small. If patients do have concerns, they should speak to their treating clinician, who will be able to explain the context and any potential risk involved.
Our Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee (SCAAC) reviews new research which could have an impact on patient care and advises the Authority about any changes which might be needed to guidance for clinics in our Code of Practice or information for patients on our website. This new piece of research will be considered by SCAAC when it next meets in June.
