F-2011-00365 – Donation polices review

Summary of request

The Authority was asked to confirm how much the consultation process, ‘Donating sperm, and eggs: have your say’ cost. Also, of the total number of treatment cycles reported involving the use of donor eggs what was the proportion  involving eggs from ‘egg sharers’, eggs from non-patient volunteers and of the non-patient volunteers, what proportion were donated by family relations or friends as known donors.

HFEA response

The HFEA’s Donation Review was carried out between December 2009 and October 2011. A significant amount of the work involved was carried out by the HFEA Executive and is accounted for in the HFEA’s annual staffing budget. A minimal amount of work was outsourced and the first document attached provides an itemised list of costs.

You have also asked, of the total number of treatment cycles reported involving the use of donor eggs:

1. the proportion involving eggs from ‘egg sharers’; and
2. the proportion involving eggs from non-patient volunteers; and
3. of the non-patient volunteers, what proportion were donated by family relations or friends as known donors?

In response to items 1 and 2 above please see the second attached document; please ensure these are read with the note at the bottom of the two tables.

In relation to item 3, it is not possible to provide this data within the appropriate limit.  To provide an accurate answer giving the proportion of donors who were relations or friends as known donors, it would be necessary to perform manual searches through free text fields.  The estimated time to do these searches, when combined with the time taken on this request to date, would exceed 18 hours.
