F-2011-00308 – Treatment provided to single women

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for information about the number of fertility treatment cycles provided to single women funded by the NHS during the last 3 years.

HFEA response

The requested information is set out in the attached table. To provide context to this we have also given the total number of cycles reported in each of the last three years. There are several points to note about the information provided in the table –

The data covers all HFEA licensable fertility treatments, which includes all forms of treatment involving in vitro fertilisation (eg, IVF and ICSI) and donor insemination. It does not include cycles of partner insemination because this is not a licensable activity and the HFEA therefore does not collect funding information.

The HFEA introduced a requirement for clinics to report the funding status for each licensable fertility treatment cycle in late 2007. We experienced slight under-reporting during 2008 whilst clinics implemented the change that may have artificially reduced the number of cycles you see for 2008 in the second column of the table below.

The data in the second column of the table below is the number of patients who provided no details of a partner on their registration form and should not be directly interpreted as the patient not having a partner.

The information in our database may be subject to change as licensed centres notify us of information that updates or corrects information they have previously supplied.  Outcomes up to 31 December 2010 have been subject to a verification process, and the centres that supplied the data have been asked to confirm their accuracy, for which they remain responsible.
