F-2011-00234 - The applications of research licensed by the HFEA

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for information about successful treatments using embryonic stem cells either in the UK or elsewhere and, whether such treatments involved the application of embryonic stem cells or their development required research involving embryonic stem cells.

HFEA response

The HFEA does not hold the information necessary to answer these questions, however, the following information may be helpful. The HFEA is the UK’s independent regulator of research involving human embryos. There is information available on our website about how we regulate such research at http://www.hfea.gov.uk/161.html . A list of currently licensed research projects is also available on our website at http://www.hfea.gov.uk/166.html and a summary of each project can be accessed via this webpage. The HFEA does not regulate the use of embryonic stem cells in treatment; this is not within the HFEA’s remit set out in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 (as amended). I would suggest that the following organisations may be able to provide further information about the use of stem cells in treatment:

  • UK Stem Cell Bank  (it is a condition of an HFEA research licence that centres deriving embryonic stem cell lines deposit cells in the UK Stem Cell Bank)
  • Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
  • The London Regenerative Medicine Network
