F-2011-00064 - In vitro maturation

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for information about treatment cycles and outcomes following in vitro maturation (IVM) and the HFEA’s definition of IVM. The Authority was also asked for information about all licensed IVF treatments recorded on the HFEA register separated into three age categories for the woman receiving treatment (<35, 35-39 and >39), and further categorised according to the number of embryos transferred (1, 2 or 3), giving outcomes as a proportion of the number of cycles started as well as a proportion of the number of embryos transferred.

HFEA response

Information about the HFEA’s definition of IVM can be found on the Authority’s website at: http://www.hfea.gov.uk/fertility-treatment-options-in-vitro-maturation.html.

Information about delivery rates following in vitro maturation (IVM) is provided in the table below.

These data were extracted from the HFEA’s data warehouse containing Register data as at 14 March 2011.  IVM data is extracted from information provided by clinics via a free text field. Please note that the information in our database may be subject to change as licensed centres notify us of information that updates or corrects information they have previously supplied.  Please note, as previously advised, that the HFEA does not regard proportion given as a percentage in the final column as statistically valid as the numbers concerned are insufficiently large.  The data given represent all verified data contained on the HFEA register, i.e. for treatments taking place up to 31 March 2009, which is the last date for which verified outcomes are held.

Information about all licensed IVF treatments recorded on the HFEA register separated into three age categories for the woman receiving treatment (<35, 35-39 and >39), and further categorised according to the number of embryos transferred (1, 2 or 3), giving outcomes as a proportion of the number of cycles started as well as a proportion of the number of embryos transferred is contained in the anonymised register published on the Authority’s website at http://www.hfea.gov.uk/5874.html.  This information is reasonably accessible to any member of the public.  As the information you have requested is reasonably accessible via the HFEA website, it is exempt from disclosure under section 21 FOIA.

Verified outcomes for treatments taking place up to the end of June 2008 are currently published in the anonymised register.  The centres that supplied the data have been asked to confirm their accuracy, for which they remain responsible.  Please note that the information in our database may be subject to change as licensed centres notify us of information that updates or corrects information they have previously supplied.  Cycles where the woman treated is under 18 or over 50 have not been included to protect confidentiality of the patients concerned.
