Summary of request

The Authority was asked for the number of gamete donors who have re-registered following the removal of anonymity in April 2005, split by male and female donors.

HFEA response

There have been 78 gamete donors who donated before 1 April 2005 and have re-registered following the removal of anonymity in April 2005. An analysis of the 78 donors showed that 53 were men and 25 were women.

Please note,

a) when a man and woman donate their embryo(s) for use in others’ treatment they are registered as a sperm and egg donor and therefore included in the figure provided, and

b) some donors were recruited as identifiable before April 2005 by clinics who were ensuring they could use the gametes after that date but these are not counted in the figure provided.
