Notes to editors

A new observer from the Human Genetics Commission, Christine Patch, has been appointed to succeed Prof Martin Richards. Ms Patch originally qualified as a nurse and subsequently moved into genetics, as a genetic nurse counsellor in 1987. She has recently been appointed to lead the team of genetic counsellors at Guys Hospital after a period of time developing her interest in clinical research in genetics and obtaining her PhD. She is interested both in developing and evaluating specialist genetic services and in disseminating knowledge of genetics throughout the health service and has published articles and text books.

She has been a member of the Human Genetics Commission since 2000 and has been reappointed for a further three years. She has been a past secretary of the British Human Genetics Society and the Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors, and is currently actively involved in the International Society of Nurses in Genetics.

The HFEA was set up in August 1991 as part of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. The HFEA's principal tasks are to license and monitor clinics that carry out in vitro fertilisation (IVF), donor insemination (DI) and human embryo research. The HFEA also regulates the storage of gametes (eggs and sperm) and embryos.
