Prof Lisa Jardine reappointed as Chair of the HFEA

Prof Lisa Jardine has been reappointed by the Appointments Commission as Chair of the HFEA. The reappointment is from 17 January 2011 until 16 January 2014.

Prof Lisa Jardine, Chair of the HFEA, said:
“Assisted reproduction is a fast developing field whose regulation raises fresh challenges on an almost daily basis. It is a privilege to preside over that regulation. I am determined that this crucial work is continued to the highest of standards during this period of change.”

Alan Doran, Chief Executive of the HFEA said:
“This is great news that Lisa has been reappointed as our Chair. Now we can build on the progress we have made in the last three years. There is no better person than Lisa to lead the Authority forward.”

The appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice.

Lisa has no declared political activity within the last five years and holds no other ministerial appointments. 
  • Lisa Jardine was first appointed Chair of the HFEA on 1 April 2008. She will receive £59,000 per year for 3 days a week work.

  • Lisa Jardine CBE is Director of the Centre for Editing Lives and Letters and Centenary Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary, University of London. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Honorary Fellow of King's College, Cambridge and Jesus College, Cambridge. She holds honorary doctorates from the University of St Andrews, Sheffield Hallam University and the Open University. 
  • The HFEA is the independent regulator for IVF treatment and embryo research. Our role is to protect patients and the public interest, to drive improvement in the treatment and research sectors and to provide information to the public and policymakers about treatment and research. 
  • The HFEA was set up in August 1991 as part of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. The HFEA’s principal tasks are to license and monitor clinics that carry out in vitro fertilisation (IVF), artificial insemination (AI) and human embryo research. The HFEA also regulates the storage of gametes (eggs and sperm) and embryos.
