F-2010-00288 - outcomes following sperm extraction for four centres

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for information about the outcomes for treatments involving TESA, MESA PESA and TeSE for the following clinics: Oxford Fertility Unit (Centre 0035), Bourn Hall Clinic (0100), Barts and the London Centre for Reproductive Medicine (0094) and IVF Hammersmith (0078).

HFEA response

The Authority did not collect this information prior to 2008 and does not hold information for each of those procedures separately.  However it holds information for the use of fresh and frozen sperm retrieved from (1) the epididymis and (2) the testes.

Data from 2008 and 2009 show that the live birth outcome rate for the centres mentioned in the request is 14% for sperm retrieved from the epididymis.  The data have been aggregated for all four centres owing to the very small number of relevant cycles; nevertheless, the very small number of cycles involved means that this data is not statistically meaningful.  No relevant cycle involving the use of sperm retrieved from the testes is recorded.

This information was extracted from the HFEA’s data warehouse containing Register data on 25 November 2010.  Please note that the information in our database may be subject to change as licensed centres notify us of information that updates or corrects information they have previously supplied.  Outcomes up to 31 December 2008 have been subject to a preliminary verification process, and the centres that supplied the data have been asked to confirm their accuracy, for which they remain responsible.

More information about how we interpret outcome data is available at http://www.hfea.gov.uk/fertility-clinics-success-rates.html
