F-2010-00282 - Sperm imports to the UK
15 December 2010
Summary of request
The Authority was asked for information about the quantities of sperm imported into the UK compared with domestic donations, and the origin of the imports.
HFEA response
The attached tables give (1) the number of donors registered with the HFEA since 2007 residing within and outside the UK, and (2) numbers of donors by region of origin. The donors are divided into two groups: where the donor has specified that their sperm may be used only for the treatment of a particular individual and where no such limit is specified.
Where no limit is specified the quantity of sperm imported is assumed to be sufficient to provide the maximum number of treatments is it permitted perform using the gametes of a single donor in the UK (i.e. treatments to produce no more than 10 families).
