F-2010-00210 - Births from donated embryos

Summary of request

The Authority was asked for information about the number of children born from IVF treatments in each of last five years where the embryos transferred were created with both eggs and sperm from donors, separating, if possible, cases where embryos were donated from other patients’ treatments from cases where embryos were created for the patient’s treatment using donated gametes, and separating those where the treatment was part of a surrogacy arrangement.

HFEA response

This information can be found in the anonymised register, published on the HFEA’s website (see: http://www.hfea.gov.uk/5874.html).  As this information is reasonably accessible via the HFEA website, it is exempt from disclosure under section 21 FOIA.

Instructions for using the anonymised register data are provided on the relevant page of the Authority’s website.  It is not possible using data on the anonymised register to correlate with records relating to the donors’ own treatment, which would be necessary in order to determine whether the embryos were donated from a previous treatment cycle or were created using donated gametes for the treatment of the patient.
