F-2010-00197 - Number of IVF cycles in 2009
08 October 2010
Summary of request
The HFEA was asked for information about the number of IVF procedures performed in the UK in 2009.
HFEA Response
The creation of human embryos outside the body and their use in treatment are licensable activities under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. The HFEA collects data on all licensed treatments performed in the UK and holds this data on its statutory register of information. Data extracted from the HFEA’s data warehouse on 6 October 2010 show that in 2009 a total of 53,524 cycles of IVF were performed in the UK. These data include all IVF cycles irrespective of the method of fertilisation (i.e. including ICSI, etc.), irrespective of whether the embryos were freshly fertilised or previously frozen, and irrespective of the source of gametes (i.e. whether they were from donors or patients’ own).
These data have been verified up to 30 September 2009. Please note that, even when verified, the information in our database may be subject to change as licensed centres notify us of information that updates or corrects information they have previously supplied.
