Summary of request

The Authority was asked for a list of licensed embryologists practising within the UK along with the address at which they practise.

HFEA response

The Authority does hold records of embryologists practising at licensed clinics in the UK.  However the information requested constitutes ‘personal data’ within the meaning given in section 1(1) of the Data Protection Act 1998 (‘DPA’).  It is the Authority’s opinion that disclosure of such information would be in breach of the first data protection principle (‘fair and lawful processing’) as set out in Schedule 1 to the DPA since none of the conditions set out in Schedule 2 to the DPA is met.  It is therefore exempt from disclosure under sections 40(2) and 40(3)(a)(i) of the FOIA.  The request for information was therefore refused.

Information about all HFEA licensed centres is available via the ‘Choose a Fertility Clinic’ function on the HFEA website.  This provides the address of each licensed premises and the names of the Person Responsible and Nominal Licensee at each centre, among other information.  Please see: http://guide.hfea.gov.uk/guide/AdvancedSearch.aspx
