The HFEA has licensed 21 cases for HLA tissue typing with PGD.  

Q) What were the disease conditions in the siblings for which the embryos were being created?
 
The HFEA has licensed HLA tissue typing with PGD for the following diseases:

  • Beta thalassaemia
  • Alpha thalassaemia
  • Diamond Blackfan Anaemia
  • Severe Aplastic Anaemia
  • x-linked hyper IgM Syndrome
  • Fanconi's Anaemia A
  • Fanconi's Anaemia C
  • Wiscott-Aldrich Syndrome
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Leukocyte Adhesion deficiency Type 1
  • Acquired Aplastic Anaemia

Q) How many successful pregnancies have resulted from the licences in question?
 
An extract of register data for treatments involving HLA for the period for which the HFEA has verified data (ending 2008/09/30) shows that there have been no live births.  

Q) How many stem cell transplants from the HLA designed matching embryos have been performed?

The HFEA does not hold information on the number of stem cell transplants that have been performed.

Q) How many sick siblings have benefited from the creation of 'matching' embryos?

The HFEA does not hold information on the number of sick children who have benefited from this treatment.
