F-2010-00158 - How much the Authority spent on alternative therapies including massage

Summary of Request

The Authority was asked for details of how much it spent on alternative therapies including massage in the past 12 months being the calendar year July 2009 to July 2010; who authorised the provision of massage, how many staff were involved and on what grounds was this service provided.

HFEA Response

During the week commencing 15 February 2010 the Authority held a 'Staff Health and Wellbeing Week', on the grounds that taking an interest in staff health & wellbeing can:

  • Improve staff motivation & retention
  • Reduce costs related to staff turnover
  • Reduce absence related to poor health
  • Improve productivity
  • Create a great workplace & stay ahead of competition

The week involved a number of lunchtime workshops open to all staff on subjects such as managing stress, healthy eating, fitness, personal safety etc.

On Friday 19 February, as part of that initiative, two masseurs were present on site offering 15 minute head and shoulder massages which were open to all staff.

The total cost of the massage provision was £675 and was signed off in accordance with Authority procedures by the Human Resource budget holder (the HR Manager).
