F-2010-00129 - Research & SCNT

Summary of request

The HFEA was asked for information regarding research involving the use of embryos created by somatic cell nuclear transplantation (SCNT), and the use of human embryonic stem cells (hESc) in clinical trials.

HFEA response

The HFEA has issued 5 research licences that authorise the use of embryos created using somatic cell nuclear transplantation (SCNT). Two of these involved human cells and human eggs, and three involved the use of human cells and animal eggs.

Two of these are ongoing research projects currently licensed by the HFEA: one at the Newcastle Fertility Centre (research project R0152) and one at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (research project R0179).

The HFEA does not regulate the use of hESc in clinical trials. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) may hold this information. More information about the MHRA can be found at http://www.mhra.gov.uk/.
