HFEA welcomes the Government's response to the Scrutiny Committee's report
08 October 2007
"The HFEA welcomes the Government's response to the Scrutiny Committee's report as a significant step forward towards new legislation to govern fertility treatment and embryo research.
"We have been calling for an updated, clear framework that is fit for the scientific, moral and ethical pressures of the 21st Century and this response has brought that another step closer.
"Our job as a regulator is to implement the structure and framework given to us by Parliament. We will therefore continue as the HFEA but will discuss with HTA and the Department of Health the implications of not going ahead with RATE."

The HFEA is the independent regulator for IVF treatment and embryo research. Our role is to protect patients and the public interest, to drive improvement in the treatment and research sectors and to provide information to the public and policymakers about treatment and research.
The HFEA was set up in August 1991 as part of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. The HFEA's principal tasks are to license and monitor clinics that carry out in vitro fertilisation (IVF), donor insemination (DI) and human embryo research. The HFEA also regulates the storage of gametes (eggs and sperm) and embryos.
