Updated egg and sperm donor numbers published by HFEA

The HFEA has today published new figures showing the number of new egg and sperm donors registered each year since the HFEA was established in 1991.

Although the HFEA has no role in encouraging donors to come forward, these figures will inform the work of those people working in the donor system by providing information about trends in donor recruitment.

The new data includes:

  • New egg and sperm donors registered each year
  • Egg share donors compared to egg donors who are not patients
  • UK and overseas donors
  • Treatments using donated sperm, eggs and embryos
  • Births following donor treatment

Professor Lisa Jardine, Chair of the HFEA, said:

“Egg and sperm donors deserve enormous gratitude, particularly when we consider how important donation remains for many families seeking assisted reproduction. Despite improved techniques such as ICSI, donors are still essential to help many people for whom a family is otherwise impossible.”
