UK and overseas donors

A UK donor is defined as someone who, when they registered as a donor, recorded their country of residence as UK, Wales, England, Scotland or Northern Ireland. An overseas donor is defined as someone who recorded any other country as their country of residence
Country of residence was first recorded by the HFEA in June 2004, in advance of the changes to the law around donor anonymity. Figures are given from 2005 onwards as that is the first complete calendar year
All donors, whether UK or overseas, must provide the same information to the HFEA and are subject to the same screening requirements
These figures include donors who donated overseas (and whose sperm or eggs were imported to the UK) and donors who donated in the UK and gave an overseas address at registration
Figures have changed slightly since our last publication. This is due to improvements in identifying whether a donor is based in the UK or overseas
Figures for ‘All sperm donors’ and ‘All egg donors’ may not match figures for ‘New donor registrations’. This is because we have excluded donors who registered more than once but we were unable to state for certain whether they are resident in the UK or overseas
