About these figures

  • The information that we publish on our website is subject to constant verification as individual centres notify us of amendments. It may therefore vary slightly with each update. These figures represent a snap shot of data provided to us by licensed centres at a particular time. Before publication of treatment and births data, we perform a preliminary validation process on the data, and ask the centres to confirm its accuracy for which they remain responsible
  • The number of new donor registrations has not been confirmed with clinics
  • The donor numbers published here will be updated annually.

Donor treatment and births

  • The number of treatments and patients using donor eggs, sperm and embryos includes stimulated and unstimulated, fresh and frozen IVF cycles. IVF treatments involving ICSI are not included
  • Fresh IVF cycles are where a patient’s eggs are collected and embryos created within a few days. These fresh embryos are then transferred back into the patient
  • Frozen IVF cycles are where an embryo which has been frozen is thawed and transferred to the patient
  • Stimulated IVF cycles are where drugs are used to produce more eggs than usual in a woman’s monthly cycle
  • Unstimulated IVF cycles are where no drugs are given to stimulate egg production.

    Number of new donors by the year they first registered as a donor, separated into those with a UK residential address and those with an overseas address, 2005-2010
