Dear Sir/Madam
THE HUMAN FERTILISATION AND EMBRYOLOGY AUTHORITY - GIFT SURVEY
I am writing on behalf of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to ask your help in obtaining information on the provision of Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT).
The HFEA was set up by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 to regulate certain fertility treatments and research on human embryos. The Authority licenses any treatment which involves the creation or use of embryos outside the body and any infertility treatment which involves the use of donated gametes. The storage of gametes and embryos is also licensable. GIFT is regulated under the Act if donated gametes are used. There is also a provision to bring GIFT using a couple's own gametes into the regulatory system if Parliament considered it necessary.
The Authority is undertaking a national survey of GIFT in order to obtain a fuller understanding of how GIFT is practised in both licensed and unlicensed clinics. The Authority is sending the attached questionnaire to all Fellows and Members of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists who are currently working as consultants in the UK.
I would be very grateful if you would complete the questionnaire and return it in the freepost envelope provided by 29 July. If you are not involved in the provision of GIFT treatment, it would be very helpful if you could still complete questions 1 to 5.
Yours faithfully
Flora Goldhill
Chief Executive
