Dear Director
I am writing to inform you of my intention to stand down as Chairman of the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority as soon as a successor has been appointed.
I have been Chairman of the Authority for four years f having been appointed to set up and lead the new organisation. It is now working well and I believe that the time is right for me to stand down and make way for a new Chairman. It is sensible for the Authority to have a regular turnover of members so that it continues to benefit from fresh thinking and new ideas.
Over the summer, I have reviewed my commitments and, most reluctantly, have concluded that I need to reduce them. It has been a privilege to serve as Chairman of the Authority. The regulatory system which we have established has put the UK ahead of the rest of the world. I am proud to have been associated with this achievement.
I shall remain as Chairman of the Authority until a successor has been appointed. As soon as I know who that is, I will write to you again.
Yours faithfully
SIR COLIN CAMPBELL
