Dear Colleague

Last September, the Authority embarked upon a review of its licensing system to ensure that it meets the requirements of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (1990) in the most effective and economic way possible. This letter is to let you know the main changes which might affect your centre.

Information for licence committees is drawn from a variety of sources, including centres themselves. In future, licence committees will make increasing use of data from the Authority's register of information and new ways of monitoring using the register will be developed. Inspections will become focused according to the centre being visited and will be carried out by an appropriate inspection team. The size and make-up of the inspection team will be geared to each centre according to its previous activities and licensing history and the findings of regular monitoring by the Authority. Finally, a shorter application form will be introduced for renewal applications, subject to the approval of the licence committee which granted the previous licence.

The Authority recognises that the exchange of ideas is a most useful part of any inspection and hopes that this will continue to be a feature of inspections. Our aim is simply to make the licensing system as efficient as possible and the inspections better targeted according to the particular circumstances of each centre.

I would welcome any comments you might have as you feel the effect of the changes.

Yours sincerely

MRS RUTH DEECH
Chairman
