Authority meeting - October 1998

A summary of the meeting of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in October 1998

At the October meeting the Chairman announced recent appointments made by the Secretary of State for Health. In particular, Jane Denton had been appointed as the Authority's Deputy Chairman until 2001, Anne McLaren had been reappointed a further three years and John Williams for a further year.

The Authority heard reports from various Members on meetings held and attended since the last Authority meeting. These included the Glasgow Regional Meeting, ISSUE's conference, and the Working Group on New Developments in Reproductive Technology's special meeting on follow-up studies on ICSI children and the use of spermatids in ICSI treatments.

The HFEA started to consider questions on import of gametes and embryos. It also began its consideration of the responses received to its consultation on the implementation of the withdrawal of payments to donors. It also agreed changes to its Data Register and data forms as recommended by its Information Committee. In addition, Members approved a revised edition of the Authority's 1995 Management Statement for submission to the Department of Health.
