July 1999

A summary of the meeting of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in July 1999

At this meeting the Authority discussed further amendments to its proposed new system of collection of licence fee income. Having reached the agreement, the Authority's Executive was authorised to raise further issues with the Treasury.

Also discussed were its draft guidelines on egg-sharing. These had been created by the Code of Practice Committee together with representatives of the British Fertility Society and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The Authority agreed that the draft guidelines should be sent to those organisations for comment and piloted at those clinics that currently practice egg-sharing. Members also agreed that the HFEA's concerns about egg-sharing should be made explicit in the guidelines and that a Chairman's letter should be sent to clinics explaining that allowing egg-sharing to continue did not mean that the HFEA had given the practice its ethical approval.

The Authority considered the draft text of its 1999 Annual Report and its redesigned Patients' guide.

Finally, the Authority agreed that its Working Group on Safe Cryopreservation should convene a meeting in the early autumn on the consultation responses received to which representatives of interested groups should be invited.
