January 1999
A summary of the meeting of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in January 1999
At its January 1999 meeting the HFEA was informed of the positive meeting between the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and the Chief Executive and representatives of the British Fertility Society earlier that month. Among the items discussed was the BFS' interest in working with the Authority in creating guidance on the regulation of egg-sharing. The Chairman also reported on her participation in the Symposium, "Artificial Reproductive Therapy 2000 - New Horizons".
The Authority continued its discussion on payment for donors. At this meeting it concentrated on considering how the climate of donation could be changed away from payment to one dominated by altruism. The Members expressed their support for the setting up of a National Donor Service. In addition the Authority considered how best to get information out to the public and matters concerning the collection of data in connection with the implementation of its new data Register system.
The Authority also expressed its pleasure in one of its former members, Liz Forgan, receiving an award in the New Year's Honours list for services to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
